I have a question regarding a business if it sells lottery tickets or cannabis. The ideal example of such business is a gas station. Are income from such businesses Halal? There are three types of people involved here i.e. the owner, the manager and day to day employees. Employee gets his wage only but the manager gets salary with a portion of profit from the business for being a partner in the business
PART A
- Income from lottery is haram.
- Income from cannabis is subjected to its multiple usage, including the genuine medicinal purpose. If the facility caters for both recreational and medicinal use, then it will be permissible to sell cannabis. However, if it is solely for recreational purpose, then such a sale will not be permissible.
This does not mean that such an income will be wholesome and tayyib. Please read other question about business use. [ https://qna.ilmhub.com/question/permissible-to-work-as-a-cashier-in-stores-with-haram-products/ ]
PART B
- The owner: Owner will be sinful for selling lottery as well as any other haram items in his business. The income from such haram items will also be impermissible. It will be his shar’i duty to legitimize his business shar’an by eliminating all haram items. This is from the challenges of securing halal sustenance. - Manager: The income that is in lieu of the hours worked will be technically halal yet inadvisable. However, since portion of his income is from the profits, all such profits would be haram for him. If these profits are more than 50% of his income, then his job itself is impermissible as well. He should look for an alternate job. - Worker: The income itself is in lieu of the time spent on the shift, which makes the income technically halal. However, the job itself being involved with haram products renders it not suitable for a muslim. One stands to lose barakah from one’s income by choosing to remain in such without any genuine excuse.
