What is the fiqhi ruling of using nicotine patches for recreational use?
Bismillahi Ta’ala
Walaikum Assalam Warahmatullah
A nicotine patch is a transdermal patch designed to deliver a controlled, consistent dose of nicotine through the skin and into the bloodstream. It is used as part of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) to help people quit smoking by reducing withdrawal symptoms and cravings for nicotine.
The main goal of a nicotine patch is to help reduce the physical dependency on nicotine while the person works on breaking the behavioral and psychological habits associated with smoking. It delivers nicotine in a safer and less harmful way than smoking, as it avoids exposure to the harmful chemicals found in cigarette smoke, such as tar and carbon monoxide. Over time, the dosage of nicotine provided by the patch is gradually reduced, allowing the user to wean off nicotine entirely.
Nicotine patches can theoretically be addictive because they deliver nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance. However, the risk of becoming addicted to the patch is generally low when used as directed. This is because:
- Nicotine patches release a steady dose of nicotine rather than the rapid spikes seen with smoking or vaping, which are more likely to cause addiction.
- They are designed for temporary use, with a gradual reduction in dosage over time.
All in all, using nicotine patches without a medical reason is not advisable. Nicotine can have adverse effects on the body, such as increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and potential long-term impacts on brain chemistry, especially for those who have not previously been exposed to it.
Islamically, nicotine patch is a medical substance to be used as a medicine. Incorrect usage should be considered ill-advised and khilaf al awla.
However, when coupled with the trending social norm of using it to get a temporary buzz, we will assess if the general populace using it as a form of entertainment are fussaq (general transgressors) or not.
If so, then it will be makruh to use nicotine patch without a need for it.
But if this is not the case, then it will be contrary to the best practice and should be avoided.
