Doing an assignment and getting paid for it?

325 viewsAugust 12, 2024General (Misc)assignment dishonesty

If I were to do an assignment for my friend and he submits the work without the teacher knowing that I did it would me and my friend be sinful towards that because we didn’t tell the teacher who actually did the work and the teacher is assuming my friend did when it wasn’t actually him.

What about the case someone is paid to do the assignment? Will it be sinful for the person getting paid as he is knowingly involved in academic dishonesty?

Bismillahi Ta’ala

Walaikum Assalam Warahmatullah

In Islam, honesty and sincerity are fundamental values that underpin all actions. These qualities are essential for building one’s faith (Iman) and serve as a moral compass, guiding Muslims to act in accordance with Islamic principles. The teachings of Rasulullah ﷺ emphasize maintaining integrity and truthfulness, regardless of personal loss or gain.

Assignments are designed to assess, educate, and nurture the individual who is assigned the task. Doing an assignment for someone else constitutes deception. If the teacher becomes aware of this, they will likely disapprove and may impose penalties. Beyond external consequences, such actions are inherently immoral and unethical. Deliberate deception in this context is sinful according to Shariah.

Similarly, paying someone to do an assignment on your behalf is also sinful for both parties involved. If the person doing the assignment is aware of the deceit, they too are committing a sin, and their earnings from this act, while halal in itself, yet they will be void of blessings (barakah). However, if the person completing the assignment is unaware of the deception and views their work as a means of teaching and educating, then their earnings are considered halal (permissible) and tayyib (pure), and their actions are deemed rewarding.

In summary, doing assignments for someone else or having someone do your assignments is unethical and contrary to Islamic values. It not only undermines the educational process but also carries moral and spiritual consequences.
