Dental procedures – do they nullify fasts?

430 viewsRamadanbreaking fast dentail procedure dentist medication

Do these dental procedures nullify the fast? Cleaning; Minor Filling;

Dentist is a Muslim and she says it wont, as they ensure water will not be swallowed using suction ?

Bismillahi Ta’ala

Walaikum Assalam Warahmatullah,

In principle, if there is any liquid, blood, or any substance that comes in mouth, but does not go down the oropharynx, it will not invalidate the fast. However, do keep in mind that if any part of such liquid substance does go beyond the oropharynx, then it will invalidate the fast.

In the procedures you have mentioned, considering regular procedures, even if the suction removes majority of the liquid, there is no confirmation that minute amount will not flow back. Hence it will be makruh to get the procedure done during fast.

However, if the procedure for both dental procedures is such that it does not use external substance that could flow back (such as ultrasonic vibration for cleaning does not use liquid etc.) then such procedure will be permissible and will not invalidate the fast.

If you do not find such procedures, I suggest having your dental treatment arranged after iftar or after Ramadhan.

Wallahu A’lam
