Are we allowed to give the qurbani meat to non-Muslim neighbours?
Bismillahi Ta’ala
Walaikum Assalam Warahmatullah
The question was answered previously under the perceived requirement of distributing the meat of Udhiya into three. Hereunder is the answer reproduced.
…The issue mentioned is a matter of Istihbab (desirability) that the slaughtered meat be divided into three parts. By fiqhi token, we also understand that should this not be able to achieve, one will not be held accountable.
In Fatawa al-Hindiya it mentions,
It is mustahab
(i) to eat from the udhiya
(ii) to feed from it to others
and it is best to
(i) give Sadaqa from a third of it
(ii) keep a third of it for hosting relatives and friends
(iii) to keep a third for self
and [when feeding] feed to rich & poor all (as mentioned in al-Badai al-Sana’i)
and gift from it whatever he likes to Rich and Poor and to Muslim or Non Muslims (as mentioned in al-Ghiyathiya)
The above indicates that this perception that the slaughtered meat must be divided is incorrect. Rather it is a suggestion for the best way to deal with the meat. The ibaarah in Fatawa al-Hindiya continues with even more explicitness
And if he give it all in Sadaqah, then it is permissible
And if he keeps it all for himself, then it is permissible to do so.
It is also his full right to keep it for himself for beyond three days as well, except that feeding and giving sadaqah with it is better (Afdhal)
Except that he is a person with large family, and not in affluence, then the best for him is to leave it for his own family and make it available for his family to ease them. (as mentioned in al-Bada’i)
So, conclusion being, customarily you may think of distributing the meat in three, but in reality, distribute it looking at personal situation.
Final point is that when distributing Sadaqah, it is an open Nafil, and hence can be distributed to your neighbours non muslims, or poor non muslims etc.
May Allah accept your Udhiya, and make it fruitful for your whole family, Ameen.
