Could you please shed some light on which masjid should one follow, with regards to one’s prayer timings? Will it be more virtuous to follow the masjid in one’s closest vicinity?

For Edmonton or Calgary, you may follow our published timings for entry of Salah Timings. This is if you are using them for you home prayer.
However, if congregational prayer are attended, then follow your local closest mosque, as long as there is no clash with the entry times (like praying isha’ with Maghreb; or praying Jumua before its time).
If the local closest mosque has such issues, then find a mosque that prays salah in their cautious time instead.
If there are no close masajid with appropriate times, then pray by yourself in the valid time of Salah. You may also try to gather some like minded people and go to the mosque and have a second congregation on the side in the correct times for the salah.
