Hope you are doing well.
What do the Ulema say regarding a woman, who wants to become a nurse or a doctor to benefit the community especially the woman.
Is she allowed to practice?
Bismillahi Ta’ala
Walaikum Assalam Warahmatullah
Maulana Dr. Mateen Saheb had recently discussed taking upon such professions where there is a deep concern about awrah and our guideline about it. Here is a link to that answer: https://fatwa.ca/permissibility-of-taking-certain-medical-disciplines-and-concerns-of-awrah/
Aside from the above guideline, when we assess our daughters and sisters taking these professions, we must make a genuine assessment if the action is being taken to support and fill the required gap within our community. This discretion will play a huge role in the barakah and blessing of one’s decision.
Imagine indulging oneself into severe circumstances where one is constantly challenged in one’s Iman and Haya’, but the zeal and driving force to provide those halal and religiously acceptable services is not even genuine. So I urge those who do take upon these professions to conduct a thorough accountability of themselves.
Moreover, at the same time, conduct yet another assessment if this is the only suitable profession which will help materialize one desire for assistance for our Muslim ummah and women?
One could still undertake education, child care and other professions to provide equally beneficial and needed services for the ummah. This is in light of so many of our daughters undertaking medical profession only to gain the status so that they may become house wives after marriage.
