There are some girls that are doing Hifz ul Quran. Is it permissible for them to touch or recite any portion of the Quran during their menses?
What is the best way for them to review their Quran. Can they put earphones and listen to it without reciting?
Bismillahi Ta’ala
Walaikum Assalam Warahmatullah
The prohibition in regards to Quran for a woman is two-folds during menses.
a. from recital (qira’ah) of quran. This is regardless whether it is Nazira (by looking), or by memory. Similarly the minimum she may recite is a word or two by breaking up.
b. from touching mushaf (Qur’an). Wearing gloves is included as though it is a hand. Just as in case for a person without wudhu’. One could flip pages using pencil or a dethatched cloth , but recital itself is not permitted for the menstruating woman.
A girl in menses may recite ayaat which are supplicatory statements with the intent of supplication but not with an intent of tilawah. Similarly she may recite durood, ahadeeth.
A general advice for girls trying to memorize Qur’an is to approach the whole facet holistically. Hereunder are five advices for the student to still benefit from Qur’an while being in menses.
- Listen to Qur’an Recitations: While unable to recite, listen to audio recordings of the Qur’an. Repeatedly hearing the verses you are memorizing can help with retention and understanding. It can also aid in familiarizing yourself with the flow and pronunciation of the verses, making it easier to memorize once your recitation is permissible.
- Mentally Review the Qur’an: You can still engage with the Qur’an by reviewing the verses in your mind. This can be a powerful tool for solidifying previously memorized passages and for mentally preparing new portions to be memorized later.
- Look at the Qur’an Without Touching: Use a digital device or a Qur’an with a cover to visually review the verses. You can scan the text and identify important features like the start and end of surahs or the placement of rukus to enhance your understanding of the structure.
- Focus on Tafsir and Understanding: Utilize this time to deepen your understanding of the Qur’an by studying tafsir (exegesis). Gaining insight into the meanings and context of the verses will enhance your connection with the Qur’an and aid in retention.
- Engage in Du’a and Dhikr: Since certain verses can be recited as du’a or praises of Allah, incorporate these into your daily routine. This allows you to maintain spiritual connection and devotion even without full recitation. Engaging in dhikr (remembrance of Allah) can also keep you spiritually active during this period.
