Anything about Nabi ﷺ turns away from those without beards/trimmed beards, in his grave ?
Bismillahi Ta’ala
Walaikum Assalam Warahmatullah
I do not know of any narration mentioning Nabi ﷺ turning his face from someone without a beard in his grave.
There is indeed an incident from the time of Nabi ﷺ wherein two messengers of Kisraa came to Rasulullah ﷺ.
They had long moustaches and shaved beards. Rasulullah ﷺ turned his face away in disgust and asked them, ‘Who commanded you to do this (despicable deed)?’
They replied, ‘Our Lord, (i.e. King)’
At this, Rasulullah ﷺ mentioned, ‘But my Lord has commanded me to lengthen my beard and shorten my moustache.’
(Tabaqaat ibn Sa’ad vol.1 pg.147; Taareekh Tabari vol.2 pg.267-266; Bidaaya wan Nihaaya)
A couple of points worth mentioning from the above incident are:
- It was a habit and custom of the Arabs to show immense hospitality and honor to messengers and ambassadors of other nations.
- These messengers who had come to see Nabi ﷺ were ambassadors from another Kind, and according to customs deserved great respect.
- Nabi ﷺ by nature was also very honoring to others and accommodating in many aspects.
- Yet, Nabi ﷺ chose this time to go against the norm and custom, and establish a formidable disgust for the shaving of beard.
- Not only this, Nabi ﷺ after showing his personal disgust for someone shaving his beard by turning away from him, also verbally highlighted this concern.
- Thereafter, Nabi ﷺ specifically articulated a comparison in the command of Kisra (a worldly king) in contrast to Allah (the Ultimate King of All Kings).
Some scholars have mentioned that this striking comparison highlights that following of worldly desire, whether it be one’s nafs, ones family, or one worldly king, in opposition to the dictates of Allah are shunned and deprived of respect, honor, and hospitality.
So, while I do not know of a narration mentioning Nabi ﷺ turning away from someone in his grave for this reason, the historical account of him actually turning away indicates that shaving and trimming beard against the dictates of deen will not please Nabi ﷺ.
We hope and make du’a that we are not deprived of love of Rasulullah ﷺ, for indeed we shall be in much need of his Shafa’ah in the court of Allah in our times of accountability.
