Shortening and Combining Salah for a traveler

480 viewsSalahsalah salah for traveler traveler

Can you please explain the rulings of salah of traveler? I know about shortening of the 4 units to 2 but is combining of zuhr- asr and Maghreb- isha correct ?

Bismillahi Ta’ala

According to hanafiya, once a person has either become a traveler having crossed the shar’i distance (Musafat e Safr) equivalent to 78km, or has set out to such a long journey with the intent of travelling, then as soon as he leaves the boundaries of his town, he will make Qasr (shorten his salah).

The shortening is only applicable to Dhuhr, Asr and Isha’. He will still perform full Fajr and Maghreb. While he will be excused from his Sunnan, it is still meritorious to pray one’s Sunnah Mu’akkadah (emphasized Sunnahs).

As for combining two salah, then according to Hanafiya, there is no combining in salah except for those in Hajj behind the Imam of Hajj.

He may, administratively, apparently combine (Jam’ al-Suri) Zuhr and Asr. He will do so by delaying the Zuhr to its last time, but still perform it in Zuhr’s time. Then waiting for entry of Asr time, and then perform Asr in its time. The same way may be adopted for Maghreb and Isha’. Performing these salahs in their own respective time is injunction of the Qur’an.
