Zakat on items posted online but not sold yet

448 viewsZakatzakaat zakat

If you have an item you are posting for sale on Facebook or Kijiji, but you haven’t sold it, do you have to pay zakat on the amount you are asking for? Or do you only pay on it once you receive the funds?

Bismillahi Ta’ala

Walaikum Assalam Warahmatullah

Items which a merchant has put on for sale are considered “stock in trade”. Stock in trade are valued at their current price at which they can be liquidated. In all probability this value is that which you have put up as sale price, then you will calculate it accordingly.

However, if you know that your pricing is inflated while the same item in market is at lower value, then the real liquidatable value of that stock in trade will be according to market price.
