Does sublingual medication invalidates the fast?

541 viewsRamadanfast fasting medication

Could you please inform if sublingual medication invalidates the fast? This is for a patient who has insomnia and has to take it in morning time to maintain healthy sleep.

Bismillahi Ta’ala

Walaikum Assalam Warahmatullah

There are few ailments where a sublingual medication may be given for rapid relief. You have mentioned insomnia. There are some for heart illness as well.

Medication which dissolves under the tongue without having to go down the throat do *not* invalidate the fast. However, care should still be taken that one should not unnecessarily take such medication. Doing so will be makruh (disliked).

If one could take before suhoor, then it could mitigate the condition. Nonetheless, consult your doctor about such decision.

If, instead of the pill being absorbed, it gets swallowed, then the fast will invalidate and only qadha’ will be required, not Kaffarah (expiation).
