As a muslim student, standing in front of non-muslim professors due to respect

431 viewsGeneral (Misc)respect student

I have a query. I am female and pursuing my PhD at UAE University, I frequently interact with many Indian individuals, including Hindu students and professors. Whenever professors approach my seat, I make it a point to stand up as a sign of respect. Is it appropriate to continue this practice?

Bismillahi Ta’ala

Walaikum Assalam Warahmatullah

It is permissible and at times mustahab to stand for someone who deserves respect. Nabi ﷺ would stand for his own daughter Sayidatuna Fatima rd. Respect for fellow colleagues, teachers or students if done out of humility and respect will be permissible.

However, care should be taken that this is not done out of its place where such respect is not warranted, such as someone who looks down upon Islam or does not have base respect for Islam or Muslims. Fuqaha’ mention that showing such respect where one fears reproach or harm is mubah (permissible) and void of karahiya (dislike), for example standing for tyrant lest one faces their anger.
